In order to apply online, you have to go to the official government siteGOV.UK and fill in your details, in more words including your personal details and proof of identity. If you apply in person, you are going to have to fill out the relevant form in the post office and submit documents.

How do I get my provisional driving licence?

You’ll need to apply for a provisional licence yourself, you can’t have someone else do it for you. The fastest and cheapest way is to apply online with the DVLA. You can get started at the GOV.UK website by answering a few questions and submitting a photo with your payment.
You can also apply for your provisional licence by completing a paper D1 form that can be picked up at a post office. This can also be downloaded directly from the DVLA’s website. After filling out the form, you’ll need to send it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AD for processing.

Is any apply needed for a provisional licence?

Yes, you'll need to provide the following documents when applying for a provisional licence:
  • A form of identification, which could be:
    • A valid UK passport,
    • A valid foreign passport with a stamp showing permission to live in the UK,
    • A birth certificate, adoption certificate, or naturalisation certificate.
  • Details of all addresses you've lived at in the past 3 years.
  • A National Insurance number, if you have one.
  • Proof of residency (if not already covered by your ID).

What is the cost of a provisional licence?

The method you use to apply determines the cost of a provisional licence. If you apply for your first provisional licence online, the fee is £34, which you must pay by debit or credit card when you submit your application. If you submit an application through the post, it will cost you £43 and you must ensure to include payment which must be a cheque or postal order with your name and date of birth written on the back.

Do I have to have a provisional licence to take driving lessons?

What is a provisional driving licence required for?

You need a provisional licence essentially for lessons, but that's not the only reason. If you don’t have one, you won’t be able to book your driving theory test, hazard perception test, and practical driving test. To book the theory and hazard perception tests, you will provide your provisional licence number as they are taken on the same day.

  4. Submit all the required documents to the DVLA. This must be done within two years of passing your test, or you will be required to retake the test.
